About Us - Then and Now

Picture
St. Matthew’s congregation began in the 1950’s and 1960’s in the early Utah mission churches of St. Paul’s in Kearns and Atonement in Granger. The late 1980’s merger of these two congregations, under the leadership of Pastor Robert Tyce, became St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. We dedicated our building in March 1992 in the soon-to-be incorporated City of Taylorsville.

Steadily increasing membership soon resulted in the need for additional Sunday School space. In 1996 the congregation went forward in pledging to a 3-year building commitment titled “Bring the Children Unto Me”.

On October 10th, 1999 the new education wing was dedicated. In gratitude to God for God's kindness to St. Matthew’s the special dedication offering was divided among the three newest ELCA mission churches in Utah.

Our building is used by the Scouts, TOPS, the Quilters. In addition we share our worship space with the Samaon Church on Sundays at noon.

In September 2011 St. Matthew's called Pastor Jeffrey D. Louden to serve the parish. He served a term call until December 31, 2013. The parish now begins the discernment process. The journey continues.

The parish celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2013.  We are the only ELCA congregation serving the West Side of the Salt Lake valley.
